A Meal That Matters – New School Kitchen Brings Safety and Wellbeing to Kenya

Et måltid med mening – nyt skolemadskøkken skaber tryghed og trivsel i Kenya

Since 2020, Gakando Primary School has been at the heart of a special project close to ours. Located in the small village of Gakando in Kenya, the school was in critical condition – with leaky roofs, muddy floors, worn-out furniture, and no access to clean water or proper sanitation.

Together with Human Practice Foundation, and through our donations, we’ve supported a gradual transformation: from new classrooms and teaching materials to digital tools and improved outdoor areas. And now – a school kitchen that provides children with the daily energy they need to learn and play.

Our partner, Human Practice Foundation, builds and renovates schools in some of the world’s most vulnerable areas. Like us, they believe that education is the most powerful starting point for lasting change. Every child deserves access to quality education. This work supports the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which we at Schou are proud to stand behind.

The engagement among our colleagues is something we feel every year. We organize a fundraising week packed with activities such as bake sales, tombolas, flea markets, and yoga – all to raise money for the project at Gakando Primary School. It’s a week of community, creativity, and meaningful contributions – where every single krone counts.

And now, at Gakando Primary School, a brand-new kitchen is up and running – ensuring nutritious meals every day for more than 100 children. A place once marked by unsafe conditions now has, alongside the renovated school, a clean, modern, and energy-efficient kitchen.
